Rancho Los Puentes, Huatusco, Veracruz, Mexico
Nov.17
Drove 6.0km N from northern entrance to Huatusco on MX125 to Rancho Los Puentes, a known salamander locality. Started searching at 9:45 along the edge of some remnant forest with big trees, a thick understorey of mostly ferns and lots of bromeliads (almost all very small). I quickly found a juvenile black Pseudurycea under a pile of sticks and leaves; and then found a Graeagaster in a similar situation. At 2 more Graegaster out in leaf litter and saw one more - 2 species here I think. After about 30-40 min I switched to searching in the cafetal itself, both in leaf litter and under the many logs that were left there. Got a fairly big green hylid under half of a log. Searched in forest near fence entrance and along highway, spotting about 5 bromeliads; all of which were full of water. It rained last night and the ground and leaves are quite wet. I moved uphill and worked the cafetal below the main building. This is real shade-grown coffee, with large liquidamber and other broadleaf trees providing shade. Searched in tons of rotting logs amidst coffee but found nothing. Near bottom of hills leaf litter was deeper and I robed in it. Found 2 adult dark brown/bleakish Pseudurycea.
P.ophlatica
One was near base of large tree and other near stump. They are quite robust - not sure which species. Stopped searching at 14:20 and drove to a very nice small patch of forest on a ranch 5 of Huatusco, where I found nothing in 30 min of searching. Drove up bumpy, slow road to Microcaldas Los Trincheras; only to find there was no decent forest. Ended up arriving in Fortin well after dark; stayed at Hotel Magnolias just off playa - pretty cheap + really nice.
