Sept.3 Finca las Delicias, El Guaro, Depto. Managua, Nicaragua
Picked up export permit in Managua and drove south from Managua
on the highway to Rivas. Stopped at El Guaro & drove past
antennas to Finca las Delicias, owned by a priest, where Javier had
found Dermophis in the past. We took the caretaker and raked through
leaf litter and looked under logs in a catetal from 12:45-15:30.
Conditions were dry, but soil was moist under litter & logs. I found
lots of Dermophis burrows and dug them up in the soft volcanic soil,
without success. I think that the caecilians were probably deep in
their burrows, and we would need wetter conditions to find them.
I did find a Liinia selae (12.09085N, 86.27888W [WG584], ±7m),
885m elev.), and Lenin got a Xalophrys. This finca seemed like a
great place for Dermophis under better conditions. We drove to
Leon to spend the night.
Sept. 4 Palermo, west of Leon on road to Supaya beach, Depto. Leon, Nicaragua
We spent the morning sorting specimens, etc and then drove out from
Leon on a new road to the beach. Stopped in a lake along road
and threw in 6 turtle traps. Went to the beach, leaving
traps in for 3 1/2 hours (14:30-17:00) in shallow, muddy water.
We caught 4 Trachemys with very little effort before returning
to Leon. Dropped off Javier & Lenin, then drove to Managua
to spend the night.
