Nolén Manlecho, Depto. Granada, Nicaragua (cont)
It was hard to search in cafetal, which was overgrown with weeds and had few logs. Our guide got a Cnemaphys spicabilis along a path on edge of cafetal (saw another) and 1 Pliinix selae in leaf litter. Stopped searching around 12:30
Sept. 2
Los Coos, Lago de Nicaragua, Depto. Granada, Nicaragua
We drove out on the road to Malacatoya along the northern shore of Lake Nicaragua, looking for the type locality of Trachemys smooth.
Drove 22.2 km to the small town of Los Coos (measured from cathedral in Granada), then found a fisherman with a boat who knew a good spot for turtles. We went with him and 2 other guys through really nice wetlands, with abundant bird life, to what appeared to be the mouth of a river on the edge of the Lago de Nicaragua. Each guy took a large water hyacinths, held them in front of his face as camouflage, and swam around looking for turtles. I thought they were kidding, but they came back after about 20 min with a male and female Trachemys.
It was completely incredible - I tried the same thing for about an hour with no success. We stayed for about 2 hours total, and they came back with another 2 turtles and said they saw at least 10 more. Apparently they just slowly swam up to the turtles and then grabbed them. We spent a relaxing night in Granada after returning to shore.
