Phalacrocorax fulicarius
6 July Barrow, Alaska
A nest was located S of the drum
area and about 50 yards west
of A.H.C.S. It was within 6 inches of
a small post (4 weeks old) and was
well concealed by the surrounding grasses. The
eggs were four in number and were
light green with heavy, large black
or brownish spots near the
large end and smaller spots down
forward toward the small end. When the
male flushed from the eggs,
he gave a distraction display which
did not appear to us elaborate as
the other shorebirds. It hunched
over with the feathers
back just slightly raised. The
tail was dropped, but not
spread and the wings were
slightly dropping. This display
was given for several seconds
and was accompanied by the
usual sharp 'click' note.
Only 6-12 females have been
noted in freshwater lagoon
during the last few days;
None were there during the morning
or afternoon today.
