fly a foot or two off the ground and hover slightly as if it were trying
to shove off the females. The group would quiet down when the male would stand
close to a female and sometimes struggle
up to her. The remainder of the 44 would
then fly off or fly a few feet away
and settle down again. After several
minute, the fight started again.
25 June, Barrow, Alaska
Several large flocks (40-50) were
noted in the vicinity of Elson Lagoon.
Pairs were also frequent - The small
ponds. Females, however, far
outnumbered males.
30 June, Barrow, Alaska
From 10-20 females were present
on freshwater lagoon. Two pair
were noted in the small
ponds, just west of the road.
2 July, Barrow, Alaska
At 1400, about 180 females were
present on freshwater lagoons.
They were scattered along the ship
narrow water while feeding
and would fly when a breeze
came near.
