Tavernon
Wash River (Island), Contra Costa Co. California.
Jan. 27
John D. McCurry, Jr., a student in 300 Zoology.
Brought in carcasses of one days catch at above location.
(= about 15 muskrats, 3 beavers, 2 racoons, + 1 Bittern)
Saved only a very large & beautiful for MVB,
discussed about 10 muskrats & prepared
pelt for personal or friends specimens or
for Dr. Quay & his Zoo 106 course here. Bittern
was caught in either a muskrat or a beaver
trap set. Cooks caught in beaver cage, -- and
for saved "carrot" sets for Dr. Benson.
See "Catalog" # 2517 - 2529. McCurry brought
in specimens of some mammals about this time
last year. Said this year he got about $1.50
for muskrat skins (they were easy to read)
from $5.00 for small beaver up to $12.00 - 15.00 for
these 50 - 52 lb. specimens. Said largest he
had caught (in 1961?) was 67#. He sells
skins occasionally -- when he makes special
sets for them -- but gets only $1.50 for
a pelt.
