24 June, Barrow, Alaska
and the both birds flew off in a
chase. One time, as I neared a nest
area-, the displaying bird (first) came
within 5 feet of me and walked completely
around me and then moved about
30 feet away. Upon walking toward
her, he went into a mouse run
and then a distraction display where
he lowered his tail and darted away.
After moving about 5 feet in the
position, it took wing and did
an aerial display.
26 June, Barrow, Alaska
Along the ridge east of the gas line, several
pairs were seen. One pair flushed
from the grass where there was apparently
a nest. One bird flew 30 feet and
landed giving the regular display
call. The second bird gave a distraction
display. She assumed a crouch position
with both feathers ruffled, tail
lowered and formed, one head
lowered and shoved forward.
The call she gave at this time differed
greatly from that of the white-rumped.
It was more of a thin sub-keezy note
emitted. The clear kee-kee of the white rump.
