0935 hrs Returned from checking traps. I have collected a very rare animal! I trapped what appears to be a Peromyscus thomasi! The animal is very similar to specimens of the same species I have taken in Oaxaca (black mask on fore- large size). The animal is a locating female, alive, but in poor condition.
This specimen may be referable to P. thomasi nelsoni known only from two specimens from the type locality; Tico = X:co, Veracruz. This local is approx. 100 airline Kms from the Puerto del Aire locality.
When Stan and Dave get back the first thing we need to do is find liquid nitrogen or dry ice somewhere so the soft tissues can be preserved.
1240 hrs Stan and Dave return, having collected more salamanders. The other mammals collected were 1 Reithrodonomys and 2 Peromyscus.
1600 hrs. We now plan to drive to Mexico City and buy liquid nitrogen there. We drove to several places in both Oaxaca and Veracruz with no luck in finding dry ice or liquid N2.
1850 hrs Arrived Puebla and checked into Hotel Lastra.
We plan to get up early tomorrow and arrive Mexico City early to avoid rushhour traffic.
2240 hrs Turned in. The P. thomasi is still alive. I plan to check it during the night. If it dies, I will pull tissues immediately, and put them on ice until we get the liquid N2.
