Snowy Owl
Nyctea scandiaca
Feb. 11 300 block, Shellgate St., Alameda, Alameda Co., Calif :
one bird perched on TV antenna, where it has been
seen for the better part of Feb 9 and 10. This bird
was a very white one, definitely an adult, with
no markings on underparts and only sparse dark
markings on wings. Interestingly, the rooftes in
this part of town are covered with a white rocky
substance which may resemble white sand dunes
to an owl. Although Alameda South Shore beach
is one block away and relatively deserted Bay Farm
Is. is within sight across the channel, the owl
seems to prefer this spot in the middle of a condo-
minimum-urban block. It has been seen by hundreds
of people, but seems not to be bothered by the
crowd that is constantly gathered on the street. The
TV antenna is on a ~~two-story building and so
it is about 40' above the crowd. However, people
on nearby apartment building balconies are actually
above the owl. This is the first confirmed sighting
away from coastal sand dunes in central Calif. besides
a roof-top bird in San Francisco which remained for only
an hour or so.
