Field Note Policy
every observation
log every occurrence of each species - note first observation or each species in the field area
- attempt to estimate occurrence as a percentage of distribution
- determine if you see an individual or behavior not involved with "normal" activity for that species
For some species, you may observe several individuals and count them all. All observations will be entered into the log.
- If no birds are observed (exact number), enter zero.
- For small flocks, enter total flock size.
N=0 - heard only - not seen
N=1 - single
N>6 - non-pairing behavior
R6+ - pairing behavior
log every observation
- count used species and estimate percentage of distribution at each locality
- note number and date of first and last sighting for each species in the area
To determine abundance and trend, use counts to record numbers of individuals seen and heard on a regular basis.
In which location did you find the highest number?
- Record behavior observed in the field. If possible, estimate percentage of time spent in that behavior.
- If only one species is seen at more than one locality, note the locality name in same format used previously.
- "+" and "x" indicate presence of other species not recorded here.
- I have a notebook to help track species seen daily. I also record notes on habitat type encountered and any observations made during survey.
- Note changes in site condition over time.
