Turdus plebejus
Los Esesiles
March 15 2091 taken from high in foliage of
dense cloud forest tree. Many robins
seen & heard squecking ~ T. migr. in
flight & seen only rarely. A "song" heard
circumstantially only - tied up with this
sp. because I got spec. from where song had
just come. It was hops crawling around
in foliage & looked like a solitaire from
gnd. This song is long-continued &
sounds just like a house sparrow in the
distance - actually is very close - very soft -
perhaps just a whisper song - definite robin
quality but simplified & degener into Eng.
sparrow song. Keeps up contni. phrases
for about 30 sec. Then silent for several
min. Many of these songs heard - also the
T. migr.-like squeal as they feed in foliage.
March 17 2113-2116 gt. chorus & songs at dawn - could make out
sequence in some - 4 phrases repeated rapidly &
incessantly. Calls ~ T. migratorius but also a
webster creeper-like squeek often heard. Pair taken
in little tree in Vaccarius-grass at summit divide
where many seen & heard. Sang from way in
dense crowns. Another ? taken was carrying moss
for nest. Exceedingly abundant all thru cloud forest &
at edges, chasing each other singing scratching in
epiphytes, running about in foliage, squeeking.
most abundant bird in cloud forest.
