Marshall, 1941-2 Thryothorus modestus Mt. Cacaguitique Dec 25-Jan 6 Not common in arid upper ca But always heard or seen in dense humid tall type of brush near summit & in deep canyons. Also found in tall humid brush at lower edge of oaks on S slope & fairly common in arid type of tall brush below level of oaks. Attracted to owl in summit humid brush Jan 14. Here there were about a dozen birds - spaced out 2 every 20 yards or so in this area of thickets. Loud call & alarm notes very striking. Not heard singing. Always kept well-concealed in brush & vine tangles. Absolutely restricted to dense tall brush tangled with vines. Usually in pairs. Lake Olomega Common in tall brush grass near bushes, & brushes back of camp (dense bush area). Los Cresuntos Common in brush - not in nor near cloud forest. But more abundant down N slope in dryer type brush where Melozone, etc.
