Cissilopha melanorysnea
Mt. Caragnatique
Dec. 24-Jan. 16 Abundant, in flocks of 20 or more throughout finca.
Dec. 24 - saw only in a flock in oaks on east slope.
Jan. 14 Flock of jays only working up densely wooded humid canyon near summit came around my stuffed owl & squawked. Many & rest of time always accompanied by Orioles, Tanagers, Warblers, Woodpeckers, Woodthrushes, etc.
Cissilopha always seemed to be the basis of a flock & lead the way. Pass thru about the same ground every day, i.e. each late afternoon a flock would pass by the hacienda & eat kitchen scraps. Mostly in finca, but cross areas of oaks also. Always in trees except when foraging on ground under coffee bushes - many at a time scratching in leaves with loud rustling of leaves. Very curious - will come to a squeak or owl call but soon pass by. Uncertain how far a given flock roams in a day - possibly stay in a given canyon & both slopes. Usually in finca.
Jan 6 - Mating display seen - 2 birds side-by-side one perched normally, the other with neck straight up, body vertical, bill horiz & feathers of crown expanded into crest.
Jan 10 Roosting in dense humid type brush on or as summit.
