Notiochelidon pileata
Los Esmeriles
March 12 5 perched in top dead creviced oak on twigs
about 200' up on canyon side at lower
limit cloud forest. Twittering - sounded like
bunch goldfinches in a tree. Also "purr-rut"
~ rough-wing (I thot they might be that) -
Were sitting - shaking wings etc (sunny).
Got 2 with one full load 10's. - This
is the bird which I have seen every
day thus far - & seen again today -
always 2 - 5 or 6 together hawking
about over bare ridges & out over canyons
also over canyons of cloud forest. Call a "purr-rut"
somewhat ~ rough-wing but faster roll almost a buzz
& sharper almost "bzzzet". Usually alone - with
violet greens only by chance. Flight somewhat ~
rough-wing - much coasting with occasional single
beat, but always very swift. When beats wings -
very rapid - swift-like. Resident? - to be seen.
March 14 & 2077 taken from flock 5 or 6 hawking
over bare canyon ridge - seen every day so far.
March 21 Singing - a few little warbles - pairs &
group of 6 seen.
March 29 & in 2201 taken as several foraged over ridge. [illegible]
March 30 & 2207 skel " " foraged with several over ridge belowp.
March 31 Huge flock found to have H.Q. in S-facing canyon
higher up wit. several 100. Perched in top low load tree.
Foraged low over cleared ridge 2217 skel - 2219
