Marshall, 1942 Automolus veraepacis Los Escamiles March 24 Sunny early am. heard whistle with "subpassarine" quality (wooden) upward inflection in groups of 3 wheeee- wheeee whreee from semi-logged ridge to s.e. Very loud & heard from long distance. Krr-r, kurr-kurr-s. Starts 3 octaves above lowest note I can whistle. Walked along ridge answering it. Finally saw it hopping in a bush at side trail (spruce tree 15' high) & shot into the crown foliage & took it 8:21:58. That heard another going down hill - may have been a pair. March 26 Heard one at dark in bushes on ridge of old fort lake camp. March 27 Foggy - 2 calling from across canyon in w camp. When I crossed they would stop. Wouldn't answer me well, but when I walked call, other would answer from far up canyon. Moved around a lot. March 28 Same place as yesterday - now heard. March 29 Hiddlebrand saw one foraging in brush at side slide at dusk when he hunts bats - said it made a gattered purring or rolling sound (trill distinct musical). March 30 Early am. went to Milt's slide & heard the troll from bird making edge slide & shot it
