Lepidocolaptes (Picolaptes) leucogaster?
Los Escamiles, Dept. Chalatenango, El Salvador
March 13 & 2073 taken as climbed from base to
& up sapling under dense cloudforest -
brush understory - had heard 2-4 saw
2 at 1st apparently a pair. Attracted to
them by unusual note i hen-like
"cut-uck" I that a woodpecker or
flicker sound. Flicked wings ~ creeper.
Taken in am. clear day-no winds in patch
cloud forest near camp.
March 14 Heard above call in semicleared - 2nd growth
appears to cloud forest on hillside across canyon from
call camp - apparently in one of the 3 or 4 young pines.
Couldn't see them -> No! is probably Henicorona
modestus - heard in this place 1973 & 2073. Not
same as call heard March 13.
March 20 Worked same place as 13th long time without
seeing or hearing any more.
March 30 & 2273 taken on ridge near where
2073 taken. Flew thru cloud forest &
lit on slender tall tree at edge where
call. L. affinis calling in vicinity.
