Marshall, 1942 Aspatha gularis Les Escanides March 12 In am - about 8 o'clock heard note: coo-lick 2nd syll higher - easily imitated by very low full whistle or ridge at lower level cloud forest where few big oaks, much small trees & high 20-30' bushes. Another from across canyon answered a country. Tried to stalk orig. caller in the [illegible] dense brushes - could get very close but couldn't see - kept calling in answer to me - or 3 times, saw it move - couldn't see a bird at all - even the close - just something moving for instant. 2056 (another) coll. came to edge brush & sat quietly watching me. Other call - rapid long above but 2nd syll. slighted. Carries long dist. 1st call may be only of 1st syll ~ pigmy owl. P.M. at dusk - I gave the call & got 3 answers - one near me in medium trees & brush within edge cloud forest, another others just same as heard in am - same resp. places - all 3 calls heard. Coll nearest- apparently foraging in crepuscular. foraging calling for long time then quick flights. could see only when flying - finally came close & I coll. as it sat still in lower brush (within) under cloud forest #2068. One of others heard after when almost dark!
