Streptoprocne zonaris
Mt. Cacachuaque
Dec 25-Jan 6 Seen about every other day - especially
on cloudy days - Usually only above the
highest peaks but on some days the
whole flock would hawk around over
the finca & coffee-drying grounds some
coming down within 200'. On summit-
flock would turn up suddenly about
every half hour - coming in rapidly
from north east - would circle & rise
above the steep south cliff where possibly
up-current of air. Then would break up
into smaller bands which would
make off in different directions or
hawk about higher & higher. Small
groups would come whistling over the
ridge occasionally - when going down -
wings would shriek. Twittering notes
often given. On day when seen
over the hacienda (around noon) the
whole sky would be filled with
swifts - very loose flock & covering
immense territory - yet would all
show up or leave at about same time
so that 1 min. would see swift in every
direction, next min. only 1 or 2 just
leaving.
