Marshall 1941- 1942 Caprimulgus vociferus Mt. Caragnatige Jan 7 42 Taken just after dusk on road east of finca where cleared for new finca by shining as sat horiz. on horiz. log. Jan 6 42 Several head late at night for awhile just as moon coming up. Jan 10 Head 2 at dusk at edge finca. Jan 8 Shined 2 at dusk in semi-logged heavy oak timber - high grunt, grunt - higher but ? quality to "grunt" of poorwill. Summary - Occasionally head or seen not in any particular type of place. Lake Olomega Jan 22-Feb 24 Fairly common - seen as often as nightjars - taken in trees along edge cornfields (#1791), stump at edge reeds edge lake (#1794), seen roosting in daytime & foraging(2) at night in evening in trees in narrow canyon above spring - shined at night in trees when hunting Cecala sigilata. None heard calling nor singing at any time. Los Escumiles March 8 A pair, presumably resident was taken in 2035, 2036 evening back of house - both in same little tree in patch brush on cleared hillside. Forage flights out & back to top or open branches - often same place. Came to & answered imitated call, Call note as above, so if whistle & roll tongue song: whip-poor-will but clear whistle - drew all way thru
