Cicada virgata
Mt Cacagnatique
Dec 25-Jan 6 Common in pine shade trees and oaks-
usually along ridges. Called mostly
at moonrise, but 1st specimen & would
answer, hoots only if could get close to
after long time. Heard usually about 4 or
5 pairs in nights walk - a pair
on every ridge or so.
Dec 29 & 1630 low notes eyeslime pink - taken
near summit of W ridge in dense oaks
answered continually when finally got started.
Jan 7 & 1704 taken in low oak growth in dry
east canyon - allowed close approach- good shine.
Perched in interior part of tree as did 1630.
Notes very high - higher than I could get with
falsetto.
Notes: who- whooo, whoos, huh. 1st & last
heard only at close range. & pitch & quality
of & spotted owl; & very much higher &
of qualling pinched quality. & also gives a
long descending rough note.
