March 25 at dusk, was on logg'd off hill above main canyon, high on mt. Heard a pair from canyon & dense cloud forest farther N. Rolloking series of hoots in vivacious rhythm - - - - - or -- - - - & much higher than S! I answered & soon they were both calling near me (but at long intervals). Presently one flew low thru the few remaining trees & alighted 10' high in little snag above fallen logs etc. & I shot it with .6's. F 2180 shel.
March 27 F 2199 taken after dark in 1st patch cloud forest up main trail from camp. Hildebrand had heard one give one series of hoots there the previous evening. I gave hoots & walked up the trail - Presently, 2 loud brinks close at hand - rough awrr awrr descending inflection. I found a little trail & got into cloud forest & called long time - moon now bright & saw shadow float across grd. at my ft. & stop. I shined light up & saw the bird on stub about 25 ft. up & shot No skin at such close range.
