Marshall, 1942 Cryptoglaux ridgwayi Los Esesmiles March 24 - then gave slower series (a little slower than Glaucidium brasilianum) from middle branch of pine near me. I saw it in flashlight - white facial areas prominent - & dropped it until 410. Later in evening in cloud forest of highest s pk., heard another - gave only one series of calls - apparently was in denser, smaller trees in steeper ravine at edge cloud forest. Like the 1st, it answered only after I had been calling in same place for 15-25 min. In both cases I had also given Spotted Owl hoots. Wslope Los Esesmiles March 31 Last night as I was going to sleep heard 4 notes of pitch OK, for Cryptoglaux coming down in pitch & very 'dreamy'. I answered & several times heard a single high note right above me in the oak - also heard the bird alight. Then the damned Screed Owls came & there was a scuffle & I heard no more Cryptoglaux for a long time - then the same thing happened again. (A very slight possibility that it was an unknown note of Otus trichopsis because the same way I gave it.)
