Marshall, 1942 Cryptoglaux ?? ridgwayi Lore Esqsmiles March 21 Stilt coll. 2144 early in evening just after ps. Otus tridopni began calling in 2nd growth timber on hill se camp. Stilt was near top of ridge & in cleared field where 2nd growth starts as a wall of dense forest. Still very light - he heard Otus & tried to imitate them (his whistle very high) for about 4 min - then this owl came out of the woods & lit on bare branch low tree at edge then back into tree on another branch - made a low purring sound. Stilt shot it one of Otus which were still calling close inuf so he that this bird was whistling. Shot it with halfload - I came later & found it by igniting newspapers for light. March 24 After dark was giving Cryptoglaux whistles (imitating Stirton's whistle which sounded like Cryptoglaux) up hill from camp on ridge where cloud forest on one side, young pines & brush in a ravine on other (s). After about 15 min. the got answers - series of whistles, each note distinct but not staccato - mellow whistle not loud nor inflected like Glucidium. Gave one series of about 10 notes - I answered & it gave a series of rapid notes v Otus.
