Otus trichopsis
Mt. Carmagnine
Dec 25-
Jan 16 Abundant - as many as 4 or 6 heard
every time night hunted in finea only.
The pair taken Jan 10 was the only record from
oaks or growth outside of finea, but these
were n't on the edge of finea. Altho I tried
many times to call them up in all other
types of native growth - oaks, pines, deep
oak woods, etc. - they were never found
there. But very abundant on finea. Would
answer readily my imitated hoots at dusk, &
would call when I gave Cicada hoots later
in night & often would answer Otus hoots
also. Often heard calling in night of own
accord - 1 ♂ on moonlit night & often
single ♀'s heard calling as I walked along trails in
finea at night. Calls: 1.) 9-13 low whistle
(as low as can whistle distinctly) at even temp &
pitch except that 1st may be a little higher or min. 3rd
higher; 2.) one short note followed by (3) or usually 4
long notes, and repeated - given when birds more
excited. Very rhythmic · '---·'--- etc.
♂ a major 3rd or more above ♂ in pitch. ♀'s much
shyer - call less & can't approach. Foraging: watched on several
occasions: sit right in coffee bush 6"- 6' above gnd. - perch
a while, look around, fly to another bush, - perching often on little
leafy twigs. Rapid flight. Mostly paired but 5 ♂'s taken during
usualy call from coffee bushes-
course of 2 weeks from same spot. rarely in taller trees.
