Marshall, 1941-2 Otus trichopsis Mt. Cacaguatique, Dept. Morazan, El Salvador Dec. 28 2 ♂'s coll. in same spot in finca, 1st from top of 6' post, 2nd from coffee bush - were very tame - almost brushed into the 2nd. Answered my hoots at dusk. Heard 2 - 1 higher than other which I think was ♀ - but walked toward it & got ♂ # 1621 which I almost hit with my face. The time ♀ may have been farther on, the ♂ not calling. Jan 10, 1942 at dusk in grove of low oaks at edge of finca on west slope of summit called up pair - came in very quickly. I called with excited rhythmic type hoot & with normal even hoots - shot ♂, later saw ♀ fly & coll - both from oaks. But apparently came from the adjoining finca. Both of red phase - obviously a mated pair - nearing mating time. Jan 14 in finca about 9 am. while trying to attract birds around stuffed owl by giving spotted screech owl notes, got a pair to answer me from shade trees along the road. I called often with the rhythmic call. ♀ in a tree 25yds away from ♂. ♂ finally flew out of dense phase at top of tree & came on set wings right for one in steep glide - calling as he came. Then a sharp up swoop to light in coffee bush up a bank where collected. I didn't answer same pairs usually called up in some places further. Forage area is small.
