Marshall, 1942 Penelopina nigra Loz Esq miles March 12 AT dusk - in cloud forest tried to see these birds - high in orchid oaks - saw only when flew - would give long shrill whistle starting very low & rising very high - very loud: then 2 reports (claps) followed by long rattle descending in pitch - explosive - given in flight. 2 or 3 where I was - heard others all around across canyon etc on every ridge of cloud forest - very common. 2069 taken by Joe Seitz in cloud forest. He flushed 2 on the ground - this in tree. March 14 2087 taken Hildebrand in high cloud forest tree. March 16 2107 shel " " in 1st cloud forest at dusk - saw silhouette high in tree. He saw 6 morning & afternoon not in midday - " says them fly in & alight, then (give rattle in flight - perhaps perched also) then they run thru the tree-tops & get out of sight - not graceful but very efficient - wings held out but not flapped much , run from branch to branch. Color of soft parts: 2069 & 2087 ; skin around eye mottled olive red lighter on lower lid; bill, throat, wattle, feet coral red - bill deeper red at base, slightly yellowish at tip. Claws olive-brown. 2107 similar line of dusky on outside of tarsus consisting of small lateral scales. 2107 similar but no dusky on tarsus, slight dusky tip or faint tomium of maxilla, brown below each feather edged with grey, tail coverts flecked with brown distally. Hand by Hildebrand on Volcan de Salte, Ana - high elev.
