Spizaetus ornatus
Lake Olomega
Jan 31 All 4 specimens coll. in
dense trees in area of little
spring in canyon back of camp.
1st flew to a little dead tree
over my head (I had been
giving Myaichus calls) & looked
at me from between its legs.
A very impressive goosawk appearing
bird (short wings, long tail.)
1st spe. I shot to the side
of it, and it flew off down the
canyon. Stuit found it hours
later - by figuring that since
it was a dense forest sp., it
would make for a dense
clump of trees. He went
to the only other dense clump
of trees along the stream &
found it, dead in the water.
The birds had apparently
come there, or had been interested
in the live traps which
contained opossums. Stuit said the
traps had been knocked around a
lot & the brush pushed off them.
Only one had fed; contents saved -
some to medium sized bird.
