March 17 Left 3am & owl hunted in cloud forest - toward
morning heard calls hoo-hoo, hooo blast 3 syll.
Strix occidentalis from canyon to north. Windy
+ foggy (driving clouds) as got light - chorus
T. infuscatus & T. plebejus & Myadestes unicolor in
cloud forest - also heard Penelopeia from all side
for a short time. Chorus slack'd off as got light
& went to top south peak. In tall brush here
at ridge & edge cloud forest got, by squeaking
& shooting at "flockeings" in brush a Bussemann
(brush well in cloud forest), Atlapetes, Henicopeira.
On saddle between n + s peaks - driving fog -
many birds - clear here- grass & bunchgrass, few
trees much rich lupinal brush. Zonotrichia's
singing, that heard & saw Clipping Sparrow,
both turdus singing T. infuscatus right out in
brush, T. plebejus 'solitary small'
in trees - much calling & chirp.
2 pairs Blue & White Mockers squeaked up - ST's singing.
Catherma acconiturio(?) in brush = Myadestes obsoletus?
1 Calif. Woodpecker climbing up stump. Coll. Diglossa
& saw many birds (Elaria, Chlerosprigis, Wilsonia, Robing)
along edge brush & cloud forest. Shot-but didn't get
Empidonax durvighi(?) in cloud forest on way back.
P.M.: Catharus occidentalis active along ridge edgeforest
back camp & in brush of cloud forest - also in open
calling ~ ityla. Hildebrand camped out & said
he heard at about 2am. a pt. owl in 1st cloud forest
