General List.
Jan 16 Mt. Cacaguigre, Dept Morazan, El Salvador,
trees girdled & allowed to die & fall & rot,
then coffee & shade trees planted. Heard
a grateacher in the brush - saw raven,
black vultures & 2 black hawks with
pure white tail high up. In
afternoon went down into chngs.
to north windy. Here a cornfield
on east (with weeds & vines growing up)
& chaparal on west side - wanted
to see if this chaparal was like
that growing on the hot south slope
of the mt. - was not - composed
mostly of vines & ferns - a more
humid formation. On edge of cornfield
a formes clearing, now grass &
brush & bushes & small trees.
In bottom, along stream, much deep
grass, vines, ferns & groves of
bananas which are extremely cold
& damp. Here shot a saber-wing.
All this once humid oak? timber -
succession much different from that on
hot south slope. Late afternoon
looked for swifts along summit -
saw none.
