Jan 9th Cacagnatique, Dept Morazan, El Salvador
Also went to flatter country below a farm house where a swampy grass field, grassy open space & stream-bed with small trees along it - only birds seen in these 3 situations were some Cinclodes & Pygopus rubiginosus calling & Passerina cyanea in trees along stream-bed. Also 2 Mex black hawks in air.
Spawons in cahoe hedge near farm house - also a few. Only bird heard or seen in 1½ mi Virgin oak stands along north-running ridge were Setophaga picta at rather regular intervals, 1 dove - deep reddish-brown above with narrow white edge on tail which I wounded. Not many birds in pure oak, but not noticeable at this time of day even if there not calling - just rust-mut-huts.
Jan 10 At dawn, hunted on north ridge of finca where many native trees left standing although coffee beneath. Here a large mixed flock tanager, jays & orioles, m. woodpeckers, flycatchers & warblers. Tried to get them to come around stuffed owl - but although they gave alarm notes, they didn't come around. After breakfast, hunted in pure virgin oak,
