Marshall, 1942 El Salvador Jan. 4 Mt. Caragnitje, Dept. Morazan prep by Hildebrand. One shined as sat high in dead tree. Heard much sawling, grunting & crashing around in trees. I was still trying to call up the pygmy owl & when I 1st gone its call tho one Potos gave a very similar sounding series of grunts! Two more ? Otus trichopsis heard in finca on way back to camp. Jan. 5 am. clear, calm. not warm - Collected \1680/ Scardafellainea at edge clearing near hacienda - was perched on fence. at a little penoll, Virgin oak & brush on one side (a few very large oaks) and ~~coffee~~ new coffee cleared for finca on the other side, was a large mixed flock of birds - from which I took 4 Saltator 1682 1683 1684 1685 atriceps - 2 more 1 more heard. They were in shade trees on finca side, tho in oaks on Virgin side of penoll - calling continually with sharp squeezing note like the single tchick of mockingbird. Would give several single calls then once occasionally a series of same gaining in tempo. Didn't seem to be feeding.
