marshall, 1941 7. General Account at Canagatine, Dept. Morazan, El Salvador Dec 27 went to top of east peak directly 5 camp & hunted in virgin groves of oaks. Few birds seen - rather late in day. 1 flock jay, several flocks warblers & tanagers, green- woodpecker & woodhewer. Also got in a large flock on saddle east of this peak. Myiarchus, woodpeckers, tanagers, warblers, thrushes, etc. These oak groves are composed of a few very large old trees which are tall, then many spindly young trees making a rather dense stand but there is almost no undergrowth - easy to walk around. Denser & larger trees on n slopes ; dense stands of smaller trees elsewhere. Dec 28 Walked east on main road to virgin oak association or outskirts of pines on west exposure where dense forest of oak. Saw russet-backed & gray thrushes & a pair of sm. woodhewers. Around on the sunny east-facing slope was oak & pine forest where 60 vermilion trogon was singing (cdl.) also a cotiga. In a pure pine grove was a flock of warblers, one which I tried to collect, was singing with song - Audubon's W.
