General Account
Mt. Cacaguatique, Dept. Morazan, El Salvador
Dec 25 Camp at hacienda of coffee finca at 4600 ft
on n slope. Apparently from this elev. to
summit was cloud forest, now planted to
coffee bushes - ground clear beneath and
tall spreading shade trees above. Easy
to hunt in plantation but not wet
condit. We came up gradud east slope yesterday
from arid deciduous forest, grassland, the
brush, then half way up into oaks and
pines. 100 yd. n camp is cleared slope
bordered by virgin oak forest, grown to
glass and brush. Several dead oaks - in
which were many acorn-storing woodpecks,
kingbirds. Wrens in brush - 1 sp. singing.
Dove doves on trail. Most birds seen
along edge coffee & humid upper virgin forest.
Clouds of warblers passing thru trees, hummingers,
large sciuurus seen, russet-backed thrushes,
kingbirds, cal. woodpeckers. Hunted most
trees around
of time in pure coffee plantation. In
little hollow with water was huge group
birds: flock Cisslopha & Orioles, plicated
& golden-f. woodpeckers, thrushes warblers,
etc. etc. P.M. 3 kinds owls heard in finca's high calls.
Dec 26 Collected in coffee finca - up-hill from camp.
Same sit as yesterday - saw birds for long
way then great mixed flocks.
