Marshall, 1741 General Rec't. Dec 23 El Salvador country Saw swamquist at San Miguel - he set us up to eats & whisky & showed me the new fossil which is a tooth embedded in bone. (Mastodon - stint) met crowd later at night at Gotera. Dec 24 Early am in Gotera a park next to the church was swarming with birds: giant's flycatcher & W? kingbird in flocks foraging (hovering) about fruit of palms or blossoms - which they were eating. Many grakles & anis. Davis & I saw many martins about church & I shot some little swallows also. Davis & I went to a stream valley on outskirts of town where were areas of trees & also open low brush. Saw Belted Kingfisher, Orioles, a motut, parakeets (probably tame) Cactus wrens displaying & fighting. Heard Lincoln Sparrows in brush. On way to Delicias saw sparrows in hedge-rows (Aimophila rufinigata-canda?) & magpie jays in trees & Cott Anis in trees. Call a Myiochanes from bush among trees in stream valley.
