Marshall, 1941 General Account Dec.22 Train from Zacapa to San Salvador Several floral communities seen along route. Directly south of Zacapa, climbed to about 2-3000'ft to lower edge of the pine forest - only saw pure stands a rather open forest of short trees - on steep slopes facing northeast. After the grade, the flat country leading down & S. to L. Gijga had a very dry formation of thorny deciduous trees (mostly naked) and large cacti. about 20' tall growth & much brush. Then at L. Gijga there were marshes, open meadows around lake of grassy areas (cleared?) but mostly a beautiful forest of deciduous trees - rather tall & open beneath. Then everything settled on into San Salvador - most dreary. Dec.23 Hotel Nuevo Mundo - very good. Had open ceiling above end of lobby above a fountain with vines. Yellow Warbler came in & foraged into vines. In afternoon drove to San Miguel. All settled. But good virgin open brush land in area around crossing of Rio Lempa - looks like very interesting 4.
