Marshall, 1940 Melospiza melodia Marsh between Stege & Isabel Pt. Contra Costa Co., Calif. Stone took several March 8, more. All taken on in narrow strip of Salicornia marsh (with shrub patches) on west of R.R. embankment. Marsh only 25-75 yards wide here. S.S. paired; M's singing usually 2 birds foraging together. No chasing seen. No long flight taken. Several heard from Salicornia on E side of R.R. at one pt... However, I believe that this is an isolated colony of S.S. - the only habitat between Stege and Isabel Pt. - No streams entering here - not enough shrubbery around few houses & auto camps or higher grd. One pair about every 75 yards or less. The farthest south taken were (78495) One pair of both had been feeding in the mud of a small patch of tules; flew back to sm. patch of shrubs in Salicornia, coll.
