Nephorettes le nigra
San Juan Island, San Juan Co. Wash.
June 23 On highest ridge north of
Friday Harbor. At sunset,
was hunting nighthawks here &
found that there were about 20
bl. swifts foraging with them. The
swifts did not come within
100yds or so of ground. Clear & calm.
Early July - at the U.S.W. Oceanographic
Lab - one afternoon a flock of
black swift came low (not
within shooting distance) over the
labs. Was a clear, sunny
afternoon.
August 2 at the edge of the
town of Friday Harbor. Rainy
afternoon, low clouds. At
6:00 PM noted a group
of nighthawks foraging about
50yds in air & lower. With
them about 15 barn swallows
& 20 or more black swifts very
low looked almost as large
as the nighthawks. They were
flying & soaring exceedingly slowly,
just floating about, so that
I probably led ' too much
but finally hit one - couldn't find it.
