4 mi N + 9 mi W Sisters, 408 ft, Deschutes Co., Oregon
Windy in evening - started E on road from camp at about 10 PM when wind had died down completely. No owls answered along the 1/2 mi road from Dry Creek Swamps (our camp) to the road junction. This was all open yellow pine with no undergrowth of brush or small trees. At the junction heard a F.S.O. several hundred yds. to the south along the road which leads to the McKenzie Highway (4 mi). Approached this F which was silent for a long interval during which a bird lit in small tree over my head & then went to an open tree, perched 15' above grd & I saw its eyes shine. May have been a F.
Soon F called to E & I found it to be calling from high in the dense parts of the yellow pines in a little draw that had much dense young fir (abies) growth. Followed it to a little clearing where it presently gave nearly the protest note in connection with the 3-note
