"March 28, 1957 Franklin D. "The abstract of the thesis is as follows: The thesis has been prepared in accordance with the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in the Department of Education at the University of California. The author wishes to express his gratitude to Dr. J. W. Bickley, Chairman of the Committee on Graduate Studies, for his guidance and encouragement throughout this work. The study was conducted under the direction of Dr. J. W. Bickley, who served as the advisor. The committee consisted of Dr. J. W. Bickley (Chairman), Dr. A. H. Peterson, and Dr. R. L. Thompson. The research involved an examination of the effects of various factors on student performance in mathematics. Data were collected from students enrolled in grades nine through twelve at selected schools within the district. Statistical analyses were performed using standard methods appropriate for the type of data obtained. Results indicated that certain variables had significant impacts on academic achievement, while others showed no discernible effect. These findings contribute to our understanding of educational processes and may inform future instructional strategies aimed at improving student outcomes. It is hoped that this investigation will provide valuable insights into the complex interplay between individual characteristics, environmental influences, and learning experiences among adolescents pursuing formal education.
