Sept. 3 was in Spain. After lunch drove to
Białowieża w/ K. Andrzejewska, driver Andrzai
& a graduate student of Roman Andrzejewski's
named Ursula. Stopped in the village of Siemiatycze
for dinner. Arrived at B. ~ 2000. Zdzisław Pucek
greeted us & checked us in to a lovely vehicle from an
old hunting lodge meant for PAN official guests only.
We were the only guests.
Sept. 4 - Had breakfast at the Hotel Iwa (willow) which
is very nearby. Then we visited at the Mamrot's
Rosenthal Inst. & later mid-morning went out with
Krystyna Raczyńska to look at a herd of wood
bison which was quite close to the main road near
farm. We had very close looks at a mixed herd of
9 individuals. From 1300-1400 I gave a seminar
on "Biomedical and pathological evolution in brown
rice on the island of Hawaii". It was held in the
seminar room of the Inst. of Forestry & Botany next
to Pucek's guest house which does not have a suitable room.
I was introduced by Marek Geliński. Afterwards
we had discussion until 1530. Much of this was with
Krystyna Falinska who is plant population ecologist
in the Botanical Institute but who cooperates with
Pucek's group. We were discussing nature of individuality
in organisms & populations (esp. plants & esp. asexually
