Loford, Rolf R. 1974 Journal 3 Sept. White Cloud campground, 11 miles east of Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif. ~4300 ft. I watched squirrels from 0715 to 1200, then went into Nevada City for dry ice and groceries. In the early afternoon I continued cataloguing trees, checking the traps every couple hours. I started seriously watching again at 1600, observing some activity in the campground itself until 1930. Two chickarees were caught, one recaptured. - Sky clear, wind 0-10 mph., temp. from about 60°F to ~80°F. 4 Sept. White Cloud campground, 11 miles east of Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif. ~4300 ft. I watched squirrels from 0715 to 1930 with a half hour break for lunch. I also worked on cataloguing trees, mostly in the early afternoon when the squirrels weren't very active. Two squirrels were recaptured and one was caught for the first time. After being released this latter squirrel staggered a couple meters into a shallow hole, obviously incapacitated. Since he hadn't recovered by dusk, I put him in a live trap to protect him from predators, then covered him with a sleeping bag. - Sky clear, wind light, temp. from about 60°F to 80°F. 5 Sept. White Cloud campground, 11 miles east of Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif. ~4300 ft. I spent most of the morning attending to the incapacitated squirrel, getting him to drink water using sleeping bag filling as a sponge, but he died. I left the area around 4:00pm. - Sky clear, wind light, temp. approx. 60°F to 80°F.
