17 June Markwood Meadow, 6 mi. east of Shaver Lake, Sierra
National Forest, Fresno Co., Calif. elev. ~ 6000 ft.
A meadow and a stand of mixed conifers stand
on fairly level ground surrounded by mountains
to the east, Sutter Creek to the south,
a road to the west, and meadow to the
north. There are 3 permanent buildings in
a clearing in the conifers (actually 4 if you count
a small building to the immediate east of
the large middle building) separated by about
40 meters. There is also a corral with wooden
and wire fencing and a fence on the north.
About 20 m. north of this fence the meadow

Trees
The trees are red firs, white firs, incense cedar,
and sugar pine. The ground cover is mostly
grass and bracken, with some brush and young
conifers. Much of the ground is bare except
for conifer needles, cone bracts (especially firs) and
male cones which have dropped off. There are
