31 August White Cloud campground, 11 miles east of Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif. ~4300 ft. From 1400 until 1935 I looked at squirrels on the embryonic grid. - Sky clear; temp. mid-60's (°F) to low 80's (°F); wind 0-10 mph. 1 Sept. White Cloud campground, 11 miles east of Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif. ~4300 ft. I watched squirrels from 0710 until 1935 with a short break for lunch. One squirrel was caught in a trap baited with a half-eaten sugar pine cone, but escaped during handling. - Sky clear; wind light; temp. mid-60's (°F) to high 20's (°F). 2 Sept. White Cloud campground, 11 miles east of Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif. ~4300 ft. I started a catalogue of the positions and approximate seed production of all the major seed-producing conifers on the study plot. Apparently Douglas fir had a big year last year, but I haven't seen a single fresh cone core from them this year. I also have not seen any white fir cones, either on the trees or otherwise. Sugar pines seem to be having a good year, and though ponderosa pines are generally having a light year there are a number of pines in this area which have a good crop. I also caught and marked two chipmunks. An area of about 42 cm² is shaved with a razor after the area has been wetted with alcohol. Then dry ice is applied for 10 sec. The lettering system I will use to mark and identify squirrels is as follows: [Drawing] Using various combinations I can thus mark as many as 256 squirrels (72 using 3 or fewer marks per side). Both sides will be marked identically. Sky clear all day; wind light; temp. in mid-60's (°F) in the morning to around 80°F by mid-afternoon.
