30 August White Cloud campground, 11 miles east of Nevada
City, Nevada Co., Calif. ~4300 ft.
On the way up to the campground I got
a collecting permit from Mr. Boll in Sacramento,
then mailed a postcard from Nevada City to
Larry Parkison, notifying him of my intention to
live-trap squirrels near White Cloud campground.
I then set out 10 traps within 50 m. of
the clearing along the power line which
runs along the south side of the campground.
I also set out 9 stakes of the grid
at 25 m. intervals in an E-W direction.
- Wind was 5-15 mph.; sky mostly clear; temp.
in the low 70's (°F).
31 August White Cloud campground, 11 miles east of
Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif. ~4300 ft.
From 0730 until about 1100 I checked
the traps and put in 12 more stakes
The corner stake is at the junction
of the power line clearing and a road
which goes off to the south about mid-way
in the length of the campground. Starting
there, a row goes west, lettered A1, B1, C1, etc.
Running south from stake A1 will be another
row lettered A2, A3, A4 etc. In this way,
anysocial interaction, nest site location,
cache site, etc. can be recorded with
respect to the nearest or most visible
stake. The action or location will be
recorded along with the distance and
azimuth from a stake. From 1100 to 1200
I looked for and at squirrels. Then I
went into Nevada City and got 1 lb.
of dry ice from the Bret Harte dairy.
