15 August White Cloud campground, 12 miles east of Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif. ~4300 ft.
I watched squirrels around the campground from 0700 to 1130, then left the area, stopping in the valley to the east of Nevada City. This area is dominated by Ponderosa Pines but is dry and has a lot of brush on the ground. The pines weren't producing many cones and those cone cores I did see were of the sort chewed by Gray Squirrels. These are cores of approximately the same diameter throughout their length, rather than being enlarged at the proximal end. Often they will show the central fibrous core, the base of the scales having been completely pulled out rather than being cut off. I'm not sure if this distinctive difference will still be apparent later on in the season when the cones are older, but it seems to be a good separating characteristic so far.
