14 August White Cloud campground, 12 miles east of Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif. ~4300 ft. I started looking for squirrels around the area south of the campground at 0700, until 0830 , when I went into Nevada City and talked with Dave Connell, the wildlife biologist for the Tahoe National Forest. He suggested several areas with a relatively clear forest floor and good numbers of Ponderosa Pines, but didn't know of any areas with exceptionally high densities of Chickarees. I drove north on Hwy 49 to a point about 4 miles north of North San Juan, where I went east toward Allegany. This road to Allegany is plowed in the winter. A few places along the road in the last few miles before Pliocene Sta. were clear underneath, but the Ponderosa Pines were not producing well and there weren't many squirrels. I then went down to Foote Crossing via 18 N 64, through North Columbia and east to Bowman Lake. I then went down to Hwy 20. The area about 5 miles south of Bowman Lake was largely free of undergrowth, but low on Ponderosa Pines. I then went east to Hwy 80 and west on it to Blue Canyon, an area with squirrels but brushy or steep. Late in the afternoon I returned via Hwy 20 to White Cloud campground - The sky was clear all day, wind light. Temp. from low 60's (°F) to high 70's (°F).
