13 August White Cloud campground, Tahoe National Forest, 12 miles east of Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif. ~4300 ft. I started looking for squirrels at 0610, first north of the highway across from the westernmost edge of the campground, then around the area to the west of it, then to the south. Around noon I went into Nevada City for food and checked more closely some areas between the campground and Nevada City. There didn't seem to be as many Ponderosa Pines there as around the campground. In fact, the vicinity of the campground has more cone cores (this season's) and seemingly more squirrels than anywher e I've checked. Much of the sign is in the campground itself. To the south of the fairly level campground site the terrain slopes down gently for half a mile, then more steeply. There are several logging roads and some trails in that area. The Ponderosa Pines don't seem as numerous and aren't as large as those in the campground. Also, logging debris and dead branches, along with dry Black Oak leaves, are plentiful. - Sky was mostly clear; wind varied from light to gusty, about 30 mph. Temp. started around the low 60's (°F) and rose to the high 70's (°F).
