12 August Hwy 20, Tahoe National Forest, Nevada Co., Calif. I checked areas near the highway from the National Forest boundary 5 miles east of Nevada City to the vicinity of Steephollow Cr., 3 miles northwest of Emigrant Gap. The highway along this area starts at about 3700 ft. and goes up and down, ending at about 5360 ft. It is dominated by conifers but there are black oaks scattered all through the area. Brush covers much of the area which has been opened up by logging. The lower area is mostly Douglas Fir and Ponderosa Pine, with varying amounts of Incense Cedar. The higher area is mostly white fir, with some red fir and Incense Cedar. Sugar pines are scattered thinly throughout. I found cores freshly cut this year under about 3/4 of the large Ponderosa Pines I checked, and 3 Sugar Pine cores. The area around Skillman campground looked good in spots, but there was a lot of undergrowth. Since Ponderosa Pines seemed to be getting hit hard, I looked mainly at the lower levels where they were more numerous. The area to the west and south of White Cloud campground seemed a good area, with lots of cone cores and holes such as those dug by Chickarees in search of Fungi. I spent the night near there. Wind light, cloud cover 5-25%, temp. in the mid-70's (°F) at midday. Many mushrooms coming up (it rained here 2 days ago).
