25 July Stanislaus National Forest, Alpine Co., Calif. I went down Hwy 4 to Cabbage Patch, about 12 miles northeast of Dorrington. The higher area was quite rocky with few large stands of trees close to the road. About 4 miles west of Ebbots pass was an open stand of large Red Firs next to the road. Most had 10-20 cones near the top. I looked in the area for half an hour for squirrels or sign. There were very few holes and I saw no squirrels. There were a few old cone cores from one Silver Pine (P. monticola) that was in the middle of the other trees. I also looked in the vicinity of the Mt. Roba road. This area was dense Red Fir and Lodgepoles with considerable debris on the ground. I did find 2 freshly chewed Lodgepole cores. I also checked in the area of Cabbage Patch, which appeared to be heavily logged. I did hear at least one Chickaree in the area, but didn't see it. I then went to Reno. - The sky was overcast all day and the ground wet from the previous day's rain. It seemed to rain around noon, but didn't rain where I was on Hwy 395. Temp. rose from mid-50's (°F) to mid 76's, to about 95° in Reno. Wind light.
