24 July Stanislaus National Forest, Alpine and Tuolumne Co., Calif. I looked around the vicinity of Lumberyard R.S. for squirrels, found a few old and 2 newly cut Jeffrey Pine cones, but not many holes. I then travelled west along Hwy 88 to Pioneer, then east along a small road through West Point to Cabbage Patch on Hwy 4, about 12 miles northeast of Dorrington. The area White Fir, close to Hwy 4 was Red Fir, and Lodgepoles, but seemed too heavily logged for my purposes - lots of debris on the ground. I talked to Dave Sinclair at Arnold R.S., who's conducting a wildlife survey part time, but didn't learn much. I then went down to Murphys, Vallecito, Columbia, Sonora and up Hwy 108 - I looked around the area of Strawberry, which is close to the point the road is closed in winter, but it was too open - too much brush. I then went up over Sonora Pass, north on Hwy 395, west on 89 over Monitor Pass, and camped near Ebbets Pass in an area of Jeffries, aspen, Silver Pine, Red Fir, Lodgepole Pine and brush. I saw old cut cones here and some freshly cut Lodgepole cones, along with some diggings. - Sky was clear until early afternoon, when a solid cloud bank moved in from the east. It sprinkled lightly for a couple hours, then gradually cleared up. Wind up to 37 mph. in gusts during the shower.
